Fusing Eastern and Western Philosophy and Worldviews: The Confluence of Thought and Culture in Literature
Have you ever considered that Lucifer from Western mythology might one day transform into Nüwa, the goddess who mended the sky with stones and prevented the catastrophe of a great flood? This is the imaginative concept put forth by the author D.G. Lampaulus in his novel collection "Trinity & Lucifer." The collection brims with the intriguing fusion of Eastern and Western philosophy and worldviews, encompassing interpretations like using the Yin and Yang of Tai Chi to explain the Garden of Eden myth, juxtaposing the stories of Sun Wukong from "Journey to the West" with the narrative of the Messianic figure from the Bible, and exploring the global flood myths found across different cultures. Lampaulus intertwines these legends, myths, and literary classics from both East and West, and through digestion, transforms them into a uniquely innovative creative style.
The Contradiction and Coexistence of Gods and Demons: Trinity & Lucifer
In D.G. Lampaulus's novel collection "Trinity & Lucifer," Trinity is the radiant deity responsible for creating the universe, while Lucifer, once the archangel in charge of heaven, grows discontented with Trinity's authority and rebels to become the ruler of hell. In traditional perspectives, gods and demons are considered inherently opposed, yet through the ingenious narrative of D.G. Lampaulus, these two entities forge a symbiotic coexistence.
The universe operates as a result of equilibrium, where the presence of light necessitates the existence of darkness. Trinity, as the Creator, is well aware that Lucifer, brought into being, will ultimately tread the path of darkness. However, seemingly opposing concepts such as light and darkness, movement and stillness, life and death, should not be in conflict, but rather in harmony. Trinity and Lucifer are akin to light and shadow, upholding the balance of the cosmos; they resemble the energies of two poles, where any extreme leads to annihilation. Hence, finding the balance point is the rule of coexistence for all things.
The Origin of Humanity: Adam and Lilith in the Garden of Eden
In ancient China, there is the legend of Fuxi and Nuwa, believed to be the ancestors of humanity. In the Western world, there is the myth of the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Lilith resided as the first male and female humans. In the novel "Trinity & Lucifer," they are created by Trinity using clay. As Adam and Lilith are derived from the dual principles of Yin and Yang in the Tai Chi, they differ from the angelic figures of the Gospel. Humanity can create and propagate life due to this natural law.
The concepts of "Tai Chi" and "Yin Yang" are not mentioned in the mythology of the Bible; rather, they stem from the Eastern tradition of Daoist principles. Hence, author D.G. Lampaulus utilizes Daoist principles to explain the origin of humanity, merging them with the Western myth of the Garden of Eden, creating a new narrative style and story framework. Even when referencing the Eden story, there is a distinct Eastern flavor, showcasing one of the distinctive features of D.G. Lampaulus's writing.
Cultivation and Trials: Sun Wukong and the Messiah
In the novel "Trinity & Lucifer," two characters undergo significant trials in their lives, leading to their growth: Sun Wukong, who self-proclaims as the Great Sage Equal to Heaven and later becomes Sun Walker, and Trinity, who takes on the form of the Messiah, born as a human son.
When the great flood approached, the energies of Trinity and Lucifer were once concentrated within a single stone. After countless millennia, a mischievous monkey broke free from the stone, proclaiming itself as the "The Monkey King" and the "Great Sage Equal to Heaven," Sun Wukong. For daring to trespass into heaven, he was subdued under Buddha's Five Finger Mountain, where he trained for six hundred years, eventually receiving the name "Wukong." Later, Xuanzang came and took him on a journey to the West to retrieve sacred scriptures, and Wukong became known as "Sun Walker." Finally realizing that his impulsiveness had caused his predicament, Wukong understood that Buddha's intention was to help him cultivate his character.
Upon witnessing the emergence of Sun Walker, Trinity embarked on his own earthly journey. Born into the most ordinary artisan family, in the humblest of mangers, he came to be known as the "Messiah." It wasn't until the year he turned 30 and was baptized, guided by the Holy Spirit, that he ventured into the wilderness to undergo trials. For 40 days, without food or drink, he successfully navigated Lucifer's temptations and challenges, which only served to strengthen his faith even further.
One is Sun Wukong from the literary classics of the East, and the other is the Messiah, a figure of Western faith. The author intertwines the stories of these two characters who transcend their limitations through self-cultivation and rebirth, implying a mutual reference between them. We can observe that the archetype of the "hero's journey" has appeared in both Eastern and Western cultures, and it's evident that the author endeavors to blend these cultural elements, transforming them into their own distinct creation.
Destruction and Rebirth: The Shared Memory of the Great Flood
Across the world, records of "flood myths" can be found: China has the myth of "Nüwa Mending the Sky," while the West has the biblical story of "Noah's Ark." In "Trinity & Lucifer," the flood is orchestrated by Chuanliditi, triggered by the fallen angels under Lucifer's control disrupting the order. This deluge aims to cleanse the world of sin and chaos, with only Noah's family escaping on the Ark. Seeing her crafted "Paradise Lost" threatened by Chuanliditi's flood, Lucifer transforms into a giant serpent to mend the sky with stones, but Trinity sends her back to hell, and the deluge shatters the stones as well.
The Eastern legend of "Nüwa," with her human head and serpent body, aligns fittingly with Lucifer's image at that time. Moreover, the colossal stone formed by the convergence of Trinity and Lucifer's energies gives birth to Sun Wukong, who was then just a mischievous monkey, millennia later. It's evident that author D.G. Lampaulus deliberately amalgamated two myths along with the literary work "Journey to the West," combining Eastern and Western mythologies and literary elements with their imaginative narrative to craft an entirely novel form of novel creation.
Fusion of Western Philosophy and Eastern Daoist principles: From Dualistic Opposition to Yin-Yang Balance
From the examples above, we can discern that in various myths, legends, stories, and literary creations from both Eastern and Western traditions, author D.G. Lampaulus deliberately interweaves the philosophies, thoughts, and cultures of both worlds, transforming them into his own creative content and thereby showcasing his unique worldview. Just like the two central figures, Trinity and Lucifer, in the story, they can represent characters from ancient myths, religion, and art; however, they can also symbolize the positive and negative energies in the universe, the oscillations of Yin and Yang in nature, and the dual aspects of goodness and evil inherent within each of us. These seemingly dichotomous entities or forces should exist akin to the presence of Yin and Yang, necessitating a harmonious coexistence to enable the proliferation and functioning of all things.
Why did the author choose to merge Eastern and Western cultures in his creation? It's because he consistently believed in the principle of "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." He saw a connection and continuity between the philosophies, beliefs, astronomy, and arts of both East and West, and recognized the interconnectedness between the natural world, the cosmos, and the human body. Through "Trinity & Lucifer," D.G. Lampaulus aspired to glean insights from the revelations the universe offers us, while prompting us to reflect on the value of our lives.
